About LearnEM
The LearnEM project aims to provide health professionals working in a wide variety of roles and health services accessible training and upskilling in the management of acutely ill or injured patients. The training will be suitable for nurses, doctors, paramedics and students working in prehospital, community based and hospital based circumstances.
In the first stage of the LearnEM project an interactive website is being developed to deliver high quality, peer reviewed, up to date teaching that will cover common emergencies, essential practical skills, procedural sedation and test interpretation (eg ECG, X-rays, Arterial blood gases). Additional topics will be developed based on feedback from site users.
It hoped that over time the website will not only provide training and upskilling but will develop a community of users that can interact, share ideas and contribute to the further growth and development of the web site. The ultimate aim of the web site will be to develop into a LearnEM community.
In addition to the web site, the LearnEM program will publish educational material, introduce discussion forums and mailing lists for the sharing of ideas, and provide teaching workshops on Emergency Skills.
The originator for the project is Peter Stuart, an Emergency Physician who began his career training in Rural General Practice before specializing in Emergency Medicine. With his friend Dr Ramanathan Narendranathan, Peter developed the Emergency Care Course in 2000, a 12 month program of tutorials and workshops for the upskilling of non specialist medical and nursing staff in acute care. The program is now in its 9th year. In 2006 the teaching faculty for the Emergency Care Course successfully tendered for the funding to deliver training workshops over three years to Rural GPs and Nursing staff throughout South Australia - The Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP).
Providing peer review to the project and contributing material and ideas is a team of emergency physicians, paediatric specialists in emergency medicine, rural practitioners, emergency nurses and nurse educators. With a wealth of teaching and clinical experience the team ensures that all material developed for the web site undergoes a thorough review process, adheres to current clinical standards and incorporates the latest research and developments in emergency medicine practice.
